The same physics, a different mechanical trick

The FlexStyle wraps hair using the Coandă effect, the tendency of an air jet to cling to a nearby curved surface and drag hair round with it, exactly as its more expensive rival does. The set comes from hair drying in shape, so the same rule applies: style from damp hair, because soaking hair is too heavy for the airflow to wrap and dry hair has nothing left to set.

What distinguishes this one is mechanical rather than aerodynamic. The barrel rotates, converting the machine between a styler and a conventional dryer, so a single unit covers the drying stage and the styling stage instead of handing the drying job to a separate tool. If you were previously drying with one appliance and styling with another, that is the practical saving, and it is a more concrete benefit than most of the feature list.

What comes in the box, and why the model code matters

UK HD440-series kits are listed with five attachments: auto-wrap curlers, a paddle brush, an oval brush, a concentrator nozzle and a curl-defining diffuser. Shark’s own style guide for the HD440UK and HD420UK series sets out which attachment is intended for which job. In short: the oval brush builds volume and tension for a blowout, the paddle brush smooths length, the diffuser is for defining existing curl rather than creating it, and the concentrator is for directed drying.

Check the model code before you buy. The FlexStyle name spans a run of variants from HD420 through the HD440s and up, and the contents differ between them, so two listings at different prices can be the same machine with different attachment counts. Buy on the attachment list, not the name.

One structural limitation is worth knowing in advance: the auto-wrap curlers are directional. Curling in both directions means physically swapping the barrels partway through, where a bidirectional barrel would simply reverse.

How its heat claim differs from the alternative

The unit runs at 1,400 W with three heat settings, three airflow settings and a cool shot. Shark states that temperature is measured and regulated a thousand times per second, so the air stays consistent rather than creeping upward through a long styling session.

That is a different claim from a fixed low ceiling, and the distinction is easy to miss when the two brands are compared side by side. One is about holding a temperature steady; the other is about capping how high it can go. Neither is a claim that heat styling is consequence-free, and aggregated owner reviews are the better guide to how each behaves over years of use than either brand’s own framing.

Keeping the airflow up

Air stylers draw air through an inlet at the base of the handle, and hair and product build up on it. Shark’s guidance is to clean when you notice a change in airflow or power, an obvious blockage, or visible build-up on the inlet, using a soft brush; a new toothbrush is the tool Shark suggests. Airflow is what does the styling on this kind of machine, so a neglected filter degrades the actual results long before it becomes an obvious fault.
